A friend shared with me “Super Correctness” (Chapter 63 from Father Seraphim Rose: His Life and Works). Happily, this piece is also available [online]. Now if I could just find chapter 61 “The Desert in the Backyard”.
Holy Nativity
A strange and most wonderful mystery do I see: the cave is heaven; the Virgin the throne of the cherubim; the manger a room, in which Christ, the God whom nothing can contain, is laid. Him do we praise and magnify.
Thy Nativity, O Christ, our God, Has shown to the world the light of wisdom. For by it those who worshipped the stars, Were taught by a star to adore Thee, The Sun of Righteousness; And to know Thee, the Orient from on high. O Lord, glory to Thee.
All things are filled with joy today, for Christ he is born in Bethlehem. Have mercy on me, Oh God, according to Thy great mercy, and according to the multitude of Thy compassions, blot out my transgression. Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace. Today, Bethlehem receiveth Him who is ever seated with the Father. Today, the angels glory as God the babe who was born. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill among men.
As the prophet said, angels and men keep spiritual festival, for God born of the Virgin hath appeared in the flesh to those who sit in darkness and shadow. The cave and the manager have received him. The shepherds proclaim their wonder. The magi from the east bring gifts to Bethlehem. And we, with our unworthy lips, offer him the praise of the angels. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, for the expectation of the nations hath come. And by his coming, hath saved us from slavery to the enemy.
The Nativity Fast
Adorn yourself, 0 Cavern. Make ready, 0 Manger. 0 Shepherds and wisemen, bring your gifts and bear witness. For the Virgin is coming bearing Christ in her womb.
